American Tall Tales Readers Journal #4

Dear Mrs. Zrihen,
I have just finished reading the book “American Tall Tales” by Mary Pope Osborne. The significance of this book was that it has a multiple amount of different stories all with a little bit of same meaning at the end. The reason I picked this book was because it was a very good recommendation from you. There were six things I did before, during, and after reading this book (2 for each). I did two things before reading this book. First thing I did before reading this book was I read the synopsis at the back to get a little more taste of what was going to happen. I then skim and scanned through the whole book looking for text features. After I skim and scanned I noticed that before every story it showed exactly what the story was going to be about  without its conflict but still made me curious before every one. There was 2 things I did while reading this book. First I imagined everything in my head but I imagined it in an animated version. The second thing I did while reading this book was after every story I asked myself what happened and rethought the whole story through. After reading this book I thought of which story was my favorite on. Another thing I did was I looked the picture at the front and it was a picture for each short story and it interested me because all of the drawings look the same (a man or women standing and look up at a view. The genre of this book was folktale. The reason that it is able to be a folktale is because in one of the stories it talks about a person named davy crocket who is able to holds thunder in his fists and shoots lightning from his fingertip. I will be discussing one story which was my favorite called “Mose”. The protagonist of this story was mose. There were no antagonists. The foils were the other fireman and the civilians. The place was in a small city. The time was about 1815 and didn’t include weather conditions or social conditions. (Exposition) this book started out talking about a very dedicated and helpful firefighter. His name was mose. Mose was eight feet tall. His plain old hand was as big as Virginia ham. His arms were so long he didn’t even have to bend his back reach his kneecap. (rising action) mose would always come upon fires that are nearly impossible to take down. Like for example when the ladder was to short and the baby stuck on the 3rd floors etc. (climax) mose likes his job a lot. Not only because it fits just right for him but because he enjoys saving innocent lives. Whenever there is traffic on his way to the place with fire he comes up with a solution like when a barrel was stuck in the ground and a train in the way, he picked up the train moved up the barrel and everything was fixed. (falling action) one time there was a fire in a building. There was a crowd around six different men with a shiny new machine putting out the fire. An apple seller said “don’t worry mose she is under control. Another set of people have taken moses job. Moses favorite job.  (resolution) after he found out that it only took 6 men to move the barrel he said that thing were changing in this city.  As mose was mad he looked at his old pumping machine that him and his other fire fighters would call it lady Washington. He stared at it took the handles and pushed as fast as he could towards the river. The other firefighters tried to stop him but with the speed rate he was running at now one can. Once he was close to the river he pushed as hard as he can and let go. Lady Washington was gone (lady Washington was the barrel mose and the fire fighters would take water out to squirt at the fire). Since then no one ever saw mose again. My favorite part about this whole book in general was that all of the short stories had the same tones, moods, point of views, etc. The main issue in that short story was that mose was losing his best and most favorite job that he will ever find. The conflict was external man vs society because it is the citizens choice on who they want as there fire fighters. The tone of whole book was very exciting and lucky for the main character but then the main character goes down and sad. The mood of this book was the same as the tone because I felt the same way. The theme of all the stoies are the same which is not to take advantage of what it is that you have or capable of doing. The moral of this book is when you are at a high rank and you think that you are on top of the world you still have to work hard and good and what it is that you do. The point of view of this book is first person. The POO of this book is cause and effect. The authors purpose is to entertain. This book was pretty well written and had very good entertainment. I especially like it because all of the books had the same moral, tone, mood, point of view, etc. if I was to rate this book out of ten I would give it a ten out of ten because of the great imagination it consisted of.

Readers Journal #3 Zach's Lie

Dear Mrs. Zrihen,
I have just finished reading the book “Zach’s Lie” by Roland Smith. The reason that I have picked this passage is because I got the recomendation from you Mrs. Zrihen. The significance of this passage is that it explains every single event in great detail and very specific. I did six things before, while, and after (two for each) reading this astonishing book. First I did two things before reding this book. I had read the synopsis in the back to get a heads up on what the book would be about. When I read the back I noticed that it said what happens if you take the “v” out of lives? This caught my attention because it gave me an obvious guess that this book would be about a family or a boy who lied about something and had his life in danger. After that I also flipped through the book and looked for some text features and noticed that on top of every chapter the book mentioned the date. I then did two things while reading this book, the first thing I did was I imagined all of the events happening, like for example when the family was getting robbed I felt like I was inside the book watching the family getting robbed. With every detail written in the book happened in my head I imaginined it. The second thing I did was after every single chapter that I read I stopped and thought carefully exactly on what it is that I have read. After reading this book I felt very good with the ending but then again I thought about it and didn’t really accept/like it. One thing I did after reading this book is I thought about the whole book and what it is that I have read. The second thing that I did after reading this book is I went online and checked for a summary to see if I had read and understood the book correctly.
The genre of this book is realistic fiction. The characteristics of this book being realistic fiction are because all of the characters are life like and the setting is too. The protagonists in this story are Jack Osbourne, his mother Patricia, and his sister Joanne. The antagonists in this book are the robbers who broke into the house. This book took place mostly in Nevada. The time, weather conditions, and social conditions were not applicative. (exposition) There was a family of four. There was jack who wrote everything that was happening to him in his journal. There was joanne who is jacks sister. There was the mom who took care of the kids with the care that they needed. Finally, there was the father was caught with the possesion of drugs and selling them. (rising action) The father worked for someone named Alonso. Alonso and two other men broke into the family’s house and threatened them if they tell anyone about them breaking in or the father or him being with posession of drugs they would find the family and kill them all. Anyways the cops had known and came by the following morning and asked for answers. (climax) Anyways when the police had heard the story they told the family that they had to move to a different location with new names. Jacks name turned to Zach. They moved to nevada and were safe there, or were they? (falling action) Peter short, one of jacks enemies, had found all of jacks journals and showed them all to alonso because he knew where he lived therefore he showed him the journal about where they are, what school he goes to, etc. Peter had also had jacks dad’s journal which showed federal information about alonso so he had to give it to the police. (resolution) zach and the costudian a former agent, had set a plan in the stages at school. When alonso came in jack pulled the lever hitting alonso and knocking him unconcious. Alonso was put in jail, but zach and his family had to move.
The main problem in this book is that zach and his family had to move states and switch identities because of something there father had done. The conflict is external, man vs man.
The tone of this article is the author felt pretty sad about what was happening at first but then satisfied at the end. The mood of this passage is very surprising, and it gave me an action feeling with what I was reading. The theme of this book is when you are in trouble you could always get help from someone around you. The moral of this book is not to do something wrong that you cannot only put yourself in trouble but your family or friends. The point of view in this passage is third person objective. The pattern of organization of the passage is cause and effect. The author’s purpose is to entertain. If I was in jack’s position I would be furious with my dad for what he was doing and putting me in danger.
This book was pretty astonishing book. Like I said I didn’t really accept the resolution because of how it was being taken care of. If I was to rate this book out of ten, I would probably give it an eight.

readers journal #2 "The Witness Who Lied"

Readers journal #2           ofek peer              September 7th, 2011

Dear Mrs. Zrihen,
I have just finished reading the book “If The Witness Lied” by Caroline b Cooney. The reason that I have picked this passage is because I got a recommendation from you. The significants of this passage is that it explains every single detail correctly. I did six things before, during, and after reading this book (two for each). There were 2 things that I did before reading this book. The first thing I did was I skim and scanned through the passage fore a couple text features. The second thing I did was I looked at the synopsis in the back for a little bit more detail of the book. There were 2 things I did while reading this book. First I imagined everything that was happening in my head and imagined it as if I was watching TV. The second thing I did while reading this book is I tried to remember every chapter one after the other. There was 2 things I did after reading this book. First thing I did was I tried to remember everything that I have read chapter by chapter. The second thing I did was I went online and looked up a summary to see if I had missed anything.
The genre of this book is realistic fiction. The only characteristics of it being realistic fiction is that it does not include anything that would be impossible. The characters in this story are tris, aunt cheryl, smithy, jack, and madison. The protagonist in this article is tris the little new born baby, smithy, jack, and madison (the four fountain children). The antagonists is aunt cheryl. The foils are the godmother and the media. Setting were not applicative.        The story follows the four Fountain children, Madison, Jack, Smithy and Tris, who within the last three years have witnessed both their mother's and their father's deaths. Their mother died from cancer shortly after giving birth to Tris, she did not want chemotherapy during her pregnancy to let him stay healthy until he came out. Their father died as well, apparently in an accident caused by Tris, earning the family a long stay in the media spotlight. Tris had ran over dad by pulling off the brakes to the jeep. In the year since their father's death, the children have split up. Madison lives with her god parents, Smithy went off to boarding school, while Jack had care for tris with Aunt Cheryl, their mother's stepsister who came into their lives shortly after their mother's death. Aunt Cheryl clearly feels no love for the children, where more than once she's suggested Tris or Jack belong in foster care and has never tried to get Madison or Smithy to move back home. Instead she is obsessed with fixing up the house, she's one of those women who watches nothing but home redecorating shows on TV all day. Only when for fountain kids are reunited do they start to piece together the mystery surrounding their father's death, and their lives. Is it possible that two year old Tris was even strong enough to release a parking break in the first place. The only witness of the accident, aunt cheryl, have lied about the whole incident. Aunt cheryl is the one who pulled the breaks of the jeep down and ran over there father, and blamed it on tris with no one to know. The reason she pulled off this action was because the father had married her sister, the mother, over her (aunt cheryl). And the fountain siblings forgive each other after being consciously cut off the past few years. The main problem was that throughout the whole story everyone thought that it was tris who had pulled the breaks and ran over his father which is internal and man vs society.
The tone of this book is very sad writing throughout the story because everything that happened couldn't change like the mother and father dying which couldn't be changed. The mood was very sad and depressing at first but then starting to get mysterious. The theme of this book is to never expect the unexpected, which means the book said that tris pulled the breaks and killed his father, but it was really aunt cheryl who came in to help after the death of his mother. The moral of this book is not to blame other people for your actions. The point of view of this book is first person. The pattern of organization of this book would be cause and effect because when the family reunited it was the cause, but when they reunited they filled in the missing pieces to how it couldn't have been tris who killed his father but someone else. The authors purpose is to entertain.
This book was very good but pretty boring in the middle. It sort of took time for the book to get to its point. To me the book wouldn't look like it would be realistic fiction. It sounds more of a mystery.
If I was to rate this book out of ten I would give it a nine out of ten because like I said it took time to get to the point. Thank you Mrs. Zrihen for recommending me this book. It was very good and I no that you have not yet read it but you should.

                                      sincerely,
